Victoria Barracks in Paddington, built in 1841, was built to accommodate military personnel in colonial Sydney. Having initially housed British regiments, it became home to colonial New South Wales units. Built by both convict labour and contracted stonemasons using Hawkesbury sandstone. The base contains some of the most historically important colonial buildings in Australia and was heritage listed in 2004.
