Kununurra

Kununurra Western Australia is a far northern Western Australia town located at the eastern extremity of the Kimberley and is 3020.7km (33hr) drove from Perth CBD. The average time for a flight from Perth being 3 hours. Kununurra Western Australia is a unique town, Due to being approximately 45 kilometres from the border with the Northern Territory, Kununurra was initiated to service the Ord River Irrigation Scheme.

Things to do

Experience a fascinating insight to Kununarra's uniqueness. The Argyle diamond mine, source of the highly prized, rare pink diamond. The Argyle diamond mine is open to visitors on guided tours departing from Kununurra. Located approximately 75kms South of Kununurra is Lake Argyle and the Ord River Dam. Lake Arglye is Approximately 18 times the size of Sydney harbour, Lake Argyle plays a pivotal role in the irrigation of the lands in and around Kununurra apart ofThe Ord River Irrigation Area

For the family: Enjoy family fun at Kangaroo Haven Wildlife Rescue, where the kids can feed the Joey's. Or The playground at Celebrity Tree Park, it has an outdoor gym, cold water fountain and toilets. The Kununarra Public Pool has a big slide, a lap pool and child friendly smaller pools. If you want to swim in the river, head to Swim Beach with its river sand and jumping tree. There’s a small playground there too.

Outdoor Activities: There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep the visitor amused such as; Black Rock Falls a beautiful waterhole and During the wet season it shows off its brilliant waterfall. excellent for swimming and picnicking. Access is by 4WD only · offering the fishing fans who want's to catch Barramundi as well as bream and other freshwater fish, these can be fished for at the central boat launching facility and jetty at Celebrity Tree Park · Drive the Gibb River Road · Kelly's Knob provides 360 degree view of Kununurra and the sunsets · Known locally as the ‘mini Bungle Bungles’ or Hidden Valley, Mirima National Park is located just minutes from Kununurra.

History & Heritage

Kununurra is a relatively new town and was only established in 1961 as a service centre for the Ord River Irrigation scheme after the success of the first stage and lots of investment. Kununurra is a local aboriginal word meaning ‘meeting of big waters’. One of Kununurra’s most famous landmarks is the Ord River Diversion Dam which was constructed in 1963 at a cost of roughly $20m but plays a big part in controlling the flow of water for the irrigation of crops in the area. The dam wall is 335 metres wide and contains 20 radial gates which can be closed and opened depending on the need for water flow. Water is continually released from Lake Argyle, 55kms down the Ord River, into Lake Kununurra
