Explore Melbourne for Free
This one-day itinerary maximizes Melbourne’s Free Tram Zone, combining world-class coffee, street art, stunning architecture, and coastal views without spending a single cent on transportation.
To pull this off, you don’t even need to tap a transit card—just hop on and off any tram within the designated downtown grid.
The “Free Tram” Route Map Overview
You will utilize two primary tram routes today:
The City Circle Tram (Route 35): A vintage burgundy tram that loops the perimeter of the CBD.
Route 96 or 86: Standard modern trams that cut directly through the center of the city (Bourke Street).
9:00 AM – 11:00 AM: Coffee, Laneways & Street Art
The Transit: Head to Flinders Street Station (the ultimate landmark meeting point).
What to do: Walk immediately across the street into Degraves Street or Centre Place. These are Melbourne’s iconic, narrow European-style laneways packed with tiny espresso bars. While coffee isn’t free, grabbing a flat white here is the ultimate local ritual.
The Street Art: Walk 5 minutes east to Hosier Lane. Early morning is the best time to photograph its massive, multi-story graffiti murals before the crowds arrive.
11:00 AM – 1:00 PM: Architecture & A 1913 Grand Dome
The Transit: Walk to the corner of Swanston St/Flinders St. Hop on any northbound tram (Routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67, or 72). Ride it for 4 stops and get off at State Library Victoria (Stop 8).
What to do: Step inside the La Trobe Reading Room. Walk up to the 4th or 5th-floor balconies to look down at the spectacular, historic octagonal domed desk layout. It feels like stepping into a futuristic library from a movie.
Bonus Free Exhibit: Check out the library’s free galleries on the upper levels housing Ned Kelly’s actual green armor.
1:00 PM – 3:30 PM: The Historic Waterfront Loop
The Transit: Walk outside the library to La Trobe Street. Catch the vintage City Circle Tram (Route 35) heading West.
The Experience: Enjoy the free audio commentary playing through the tram speakers as it rattles along the city fringe. Take it all the way to Docklands (District Docklands/Stop 11).
What to do: Stroll along the modern waterfront harbor of Docklands. If you need a cheap lunch, head into the Spencer Outlet Centre nearby for budget food court options, or picnic along the wharf.
3:30 PM – 6:00 PM: Immersive Pop Culture & Moving Images
The Transit: From Docklands, hop on Tram 86 or 96 heading East down Bourke Street. Get off at Bourke St/Swanston St (Stop 5) and walk down to Federation Square.
What to do: Head directly into ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image). Enter their centerpiece free exhibition, The Story of the Moving Image. It is completely interactive—you can play vintage Australian arcade games, experiment with Foley sound effects, and view original props from films like Mad Max.
6:00 PM Onward: Sunset at the Parliament & Chinatown
The Transit: Walk back to Bourke Street and catch Tram 86 or 96 heading East to the edge of the free zone: Spring St/Bourke St (Stop 9).
What to do: Step off right in front of the grand, columned Parliament House. This is a prime sunset photography location.
Dinner: Walk one block down into Chinatown (Little Bourke Street). To keep the budget intact, look for legendary “cheap eats” institutions like Shanghai Street or Juicy Dumpling where you can get a massive plate of pan-fried dumplings for under $10 USD ($15 AUD).
