Wine Regions of South Australia
There is good argument to say South Australia is wine! No doubt about it! The Barossa comprises the Barossa and Eden valleys. Just 30 kilometres long and about 14 kilometres wide, this South Australia Wine Region produces over 20% of Australia’s wines. Due to it having an ideal grape growing climate. Hot dry summers and cool wet winters.
Internationally renowned for its fine quality cool climate wines the Clare Valley. It specialises in Riesling grapes but is by no means confined to that variety. Wine was established in the Valley by the community of Jesuits in 1851 and still run by the order today (Sevenhill Cellar). More than 40 wineries operate in the Valley today.
Another cool climate wine producing region is the Adelaide Hills. Adelaide Hills first plantings date back from 1839, the region now boasts more than 50 wineries centred on Hahndorf. This including a dozen cellar doors.
Clare Valley Wine Region
Known as the heart of Australian Riesling, Clare is known for its exceptional whites. Riesling is the speciality of this scenic region with its historic towns, wooded valleys, rolling countryside and fine foods.
The Clare Valley is approximately a 90 minute drive from Adelaide and has over 40 cellar doors to explore. A fantastic way to relax and unwind and experience the Clare Valley is on the Riesling and Rattler Trail, an easy cycle path that winds 35 kilometres through the countryside.
Barossa Valley Wine Region
Scenic Drive
Winding from Gawler to Tanunda. The driving distance between Gawler to Tanunda is 27 km. It takes approximately 22 min to drive from Gawler to Tanunda. The scenic experience you will enjoy as you proceed through an idyllic landscape of vineyards and paddocks backed by the contrasting Golden Brown Hills of the Barossa Ranges and dotted with European style towns and villages. The Barossa Valley way is the perfect introduction to one of Australia’s Premier wine regions and most scenic valleys.
Riverland Wine Region
Irrigation has turned these sun drenched plains of sandy loams into a major source of red and white table wine – the local speciality – fortified wines.
Adelaide Hills Wine Region
This premium cool-climate wine region – Sauvignon Blanc is a speciality – lies in undulating hills, amid forests orchards and farmland.
You’ll find more than 60 wineries and over 50 cellar doors, just minutes from the city. Get off the beaten track and treat yourself to a unique Adelaide Hills drop. Settle-in for a long lunch that could easily turn into a weekend away.
Scenic Drive
Take the South Eastern freeway from Adelaide, (The distance between Adelaide city to Adelaide Hills is 45 Km by road approximately 26 minutes) then turn off to Hahndorf. Follow the B34 North and then East through the quaint villages of Oakbank and Woodside then turn left into Lobethal. From here the main road to Adelaide winds through vineyards and climbs hills with the amazing views. Take the turnoff to Uraidla and Summertown, then turn left off Green Hill Rd to visit Mount Lofty, before re-joining the freeway
McLaren Vale Wine Region
The McLaren Vale Wine Region diversity of the wines is a reflection of the variety of soil types and landscapes of the region. Ranging from sand on the coast to ironstone in the hills and red earth on the flats
McLaren Vale is a favourite South Australian wine region with more than 70 cellar doors to explore. As one of the most accessible wine regions in South Australia, McLaren Vale is just a short 40 minute drive from the Adelaide CBD and close to stunning coastal vistas. Here you will find world-class Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay as well as lesser-produced varieties such as Tempranillo, Marsanne, Rousanne and Sangiovese
Coonawarra Wine Region
The Coonawarra is well-regarded as Australia’s top producer of premium red wines. The Vines grown in the regions famous strip of terra rossa (red earth) produce some of Australia’s finest cabernet sauvignon and shiraz.
Coonawarra is a small region and is only 20 kilometres in length and two kilometres in diameter. Despite this, it is home to more than 24 cellar doors.
You will find it hard to resist the Limestone Coast’s Coonawarra region. You should set a aside at least a day to be able to explore ‘Australia’s other red centre’.
As well as wine, Coonawarra wineries sell some of the best local produce available.
