Port Lincoln South Australia

Port Lincoln is situated on Boston Bay, one of the largest protected natural harbours in the world and three times the size of Sydney Harbour and is part of the Eyre Peninsula.Matthew Flinders came to the area in 1802 and named it Port Lincoln, it was settled by white man in 1839. Port Lincoln today is a vibrant regional centre and the perfect base from which to explore the Southern Eyre Peninsula.

Port Lincoln region is all about the many monuments, memorials and museums that tell the pioneer and maritime history of Port Lincoln region including the Axel Stenross Maritime Museum, Mill Cottage Museum, Railway Museum, the RSL military memorabilia display, Settlers Cottage Museum and Tod Reservoir Museum.

For the family: Enjoy family fun, Admire the Koalas, kangaroos, birds and emus freely roam amongst the big old manna gum at the Mikkira Station Koala Sanctuary. Enjoy the many playgrounds like Flinders Playgrounds, Foreshore playground and Lincoln SK8 Park.

Outdoor Activities: There are plenty of outdoor activities to keep the visitor amused such as; For outdoorsy adventure types, shark cage diving, swimming with sea lions, sailing, windsurfing, paddle boating, scuba diving, kayaking, surfing, cruising, and fishing. Away from the water, playing a round or two on Port Lincoln’s beautiful 18-hole golf course, horse racing, bushwalking and camping in the National Parks, plus wildlife petting and birdwatching all provide relaxing ways to while away your day. Hikers have a couple of worthwhile options in the Investigator, Parnkalla and the town’s Heritage walking trails. Or for the more adventurous, challenging walks abound in Lincoln National Park and Coffin Bay National Park. Love a great view? Lincoln Cove, Boston Bay, Lincoln National Park, Thorny Passage Marine Park and Whaler’s Way all provide magnificent coastal panoramas. Nearby, Winter Hill—one of Australia’s most spectacular views—overlooks Port Lincoln and Boston Bay.·

History & Heritage

The original inhabitants of the Eyre Peninsula and is traditional home to the Barngarla (Port Lincoln area), Nauo on the Southern Side, and Wirangu peoples further up the far west coast. Port Lincoln is steeped in maritime and pioneering history. In 1802, Mathew Flinders named Port Lincoln after his native county of Lincolnshire in England after he sailed his exploration vessel HMS Investigator into the harbour.
