Perched high atop Mt Stirling in Victoria’s spectacular High Country, Craig’s Hut offers breathtaking panoramic views of the alpine ranges and is one of the most photographed landmarks in Australia.
Originally constructed as a film set for the iconic 1982 movie The Man from Snowy River, Craig’s Hut has become a powerful symbol of Australia’s pioneering spirit and settler heritage.
Just a 2.5-hour drive (283 km) from Melbourne, the High Country is a year-round destination for adventure and relaxation. In winter, the region transforms into a snowy wonderland ideal for skiing at nearby resorts such as Mt Buller, Falls Creek, and Mt Hotham. During the warmer months, visitors can hike, four-wheel-drive, or simply soak in the rugged alpine scenery.
Access Craig’s Hut via 4WD or enjoy a scenic 1.2-kilometre walking trail from the Day Visitor Area.
The walking track starts at the Circuit Road Picnic Area, 1 km before the Craig’s Hut turn-off.
This stunning 3km return walk passes amongst the low snow gums with views across the surrounding alpine valleys, leading up to Craig’s Hut.
Drive, horse-ride, mountain-bike or hike – no matter how you get to the hut, make sure to pack a picnic.
