The Breadknife and Grand High Tops Walk is one of the most iconic bushwalks in Warrumbungle National Park, showcasing breathtaking views across a rugged volcanic landscape and some of the park’s most famous rock formations. Widely regarded as the jewel of the Warrumbungles, this challenging hike is a must-do for experienced walkers who enjoy rewarding climbs and dramatic scenery.
The trail follows Spirey Creek before ascending steeply through the heart of the range, offering close encounters with spectacular formations such as the Breadknife, Belougery Spire, Bress Peak and the towering Crater Bluff. Wildlife sightings are common along the track, adding to the sense of adventure.
As you climb, you’ll pass Balor Hut campground — an ideal place to stop for a picnic while taking in one of the finest panoramas in New South Wales. From the summit of the Grand High Tops, the walk continues toward the Western High Tops and Ogma Gap campground, with views of Bluff Mountain near Dows Camp along the way.
The full loop walk covers 14.5 kilometres and returns to Pincham car park via the West Spirey Track. Walkers seeking a shorter option can complete a 12.5-kilometre return walk by using the Dagda Shortcut.
During spring, the landscape bursts into colour with wildflowers including purple hoveas, white daisy bushes, yellow wattles and bright orange pea flowers, making this walk particularly memorable.
