Tourist Attraction: Cradle Mountain, North West Tasmania
Cradle Mountain, located at the northern end of the Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National Park, is one of Tasmania’s most iconic natural attractions. Towering above the serene waters of Dove Lake, its dramatic summit — the fifth highest in the state — creates one of the most photographed landscapes in Australia. Surrounding ridges and rugged peaks offer stunning panoramic views from every angle.
Although there’s no township at Cradle Mountain, visitors will find cabins, chalets, lodges and campgrounds within and near the park, making it easy to stay close to the wilderness. As part of the Tasmanian World Heritage Wilderness Area, the region features diverse landscapes including rainforest, grasslands, alpine heath, and ancient species like the King Billy pine and deciduous beech (fagus).
Wildlife lovers can spot Tasmanian devils, quolls, echidnas, platypus, and a wide variety of birdlife. The park also offers an impressive range of walking trails, from short, easy circuits to challenging alpine hikes. After a day of adventure, unwind with the comforts of home — or even indulge in a luxury spa experience.
For a cultural touch, stroll through the Wilderness Gallery, showcasing around 250 captivating images by leading Australian and international nature photographers.
Cradle Mountain is easily accessible — 1.5 hours from Devonport and 2.5 hours from Launceston. Those taking on the famous Overland Track can book transfers between Launceston, Cradle Mountain, and Lake St Clair.
Perfect for hikers, photographers, wildlife enthusiasts and nature seekers, Cradle Mountain is a must-visit destination on Tasmania’s North West Coast.
