Destination: Victorian Highcountry

The High Country is located in the north-east of Victoria. It is an area that features national parks, Victoria’s highest mountains, lakes, snow resorts, vineyards and a rich history including gold discovery, cattlemen and bushrangers.

Victoria’s High Country region is home to the spectacular Victorian Alps, characterised by the  snow cover slopes in Winter of Mount Buller, Falls Creek, Mount Buffalo, Mount  Hotham, which are an attraction in themselves for their ski, ski boarding, toboggan runs and cross country skiing, however nature has also provided the region with interesting forested ranges and gorges, tranquil alpine lakes and rivers. The Alpine National Park is the largest in Victoria you will find almost 900 species of native plants and in spring you will be treated to a wildflower display. To experience the parks natural beauty, it would be suggested that you drive the Great Alpine Road Touring Route which winds through the Victorian Alps on the highest altitude road in Victoria, and offers panoramic views as far as you can see.

A diverse array of walking tracks radiate out from the towns with the region which lead to superb vistas. Horse riding, mountain-biking, hiking, four wheel driving, boating, swimming, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, skydiving, hang gliding, paragliding, rock climbing, ballooning as well as one of Victoria’s must visited wine regions and food trails are reasons why the region has turned into an all year round resort.

Some of the more relaxed and popular attractions of the High Country, would be to explore, by either walking or hiking the many adventure trails, which will take you to some stunning waterfalls and rivers, cascading torrents of water or a walking climb to a lookout where cattlemen mountain huts and mountain scenery offer a great photo opportunity. Or fly fishing for trout on the Goulburn River, some of the most popular spots stretch from the Eildon Pondage to Alexandra. Or escape to the peaceful and tranquil surrounds of Lake Eildon and hire a houseboat to take in all the beauty of the landscapes surrounding the lake.
